This is one of the most difficult books I’ve ever reviewed. The first half of the book was extremely hard to put down. The second half was definitely not.The first half was a clearly and honestly written story from theperspective of a little girl coping with the trauma of her autistic brother’s behaviors. The perspective changed almost abruptly when she saw her brother for the first time after a four-year separation. The raw honesty was replaced with such a heavy coating of religiosity that seemed it to cover everything like wallpaper. Yes, her brother had made great progress.The book has so many good qualities. The little girl’s naively charming coping skills opened her world and drew you to her. You could almost feel the family’s desperation through her anger.And yet. The second half was peripherally about the improvement in autistic brother’s functioning and an incessant review of her pious ancestors.Perhaps I would have appreciated the book more were I orthodox. But I don’t think so.It was a challenge deciding between three and four stars largely because of the almost dichotomous halves. I believe this author has the ability to communicate to a wider audience if she stays in touch with feeling she allowed the child to have and stays away from repeating over and over the piety and status of her ancestors.
