Two old college buddies contemplate hiking the Appalachian Trail. The problem is, one of them is severely vision impaired and his ability to follow a simple footpath is in serious question. They decide to first try an overnight hike in Arkansas; an unmitigated disaster. Upon their return, one fellow's wife declares he is too old fat and blind to be crashing about in the woods. The other’s wife notes how lucky they are to have learned their lesson before attempting anything as seriously challenging as the Appalachian Trail. I’m an old guy who at one time considered himself an adventurer. If you are so inclined, you will love this book. A man at retirement age with only one eye and who is legally blind hiking the Appalachian Trail is a real testament to courage and determination. I have read Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods and I loved it. Thompson’s book is a far superior read. The book has a lot of humor and at times reminds me of a Carl Hiaasen book. I was chuckling frequently. However, it also portrays the real life challenges of hiking the AT. It should be required reading for anyone thinking about hiking that trail.
